Stopping Over-Development

Picture

While running for city office in 2008
, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley promised to protect our community from over-development and kept her word by rezoning over 300 blocks in record time.  A three year old  rezoning plan authored by our own community leaders was dusted off when Council Member Crowley move the Department of City Planning forward from environmental review to ULURP process to implementation. No longer will big developers will be able to buy in and build huge complexes and apartment buildingsin neighborhoods of Glendale, Maspeth, and Middle Village

I congratulate the community leaders who put together the rezoning proposal and I'm honored I could make it law and a reality for the neighborhoods of Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village.  Protecting the character of our community by limiting over-development, specifically in our residential neighborhoods, has been and will always remain a priority of mine,” said Council Member Elizabeth Crowley.

Restoring Our Fire and Emergency Services

Picture
Fighting to protect our Fire and Emergency Medical Services
When the Bloomberg Administration proposed to close 16 fire companies to balance a once jeopardized City budget, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley was an instrumental leader in the restoration of our much needed services. As a member of the Fire and Criminal Justice Committee, Elizabeth repeatedly called on the Mayor and the Fire Commissioner, organized with other elected officials, co-hosted a n informational town meeting, and met with every company in district 30 to advocate on behalf of our neighborhoods to keep our fire companies open.

On the step of City Hall, in the streets and in front of Engine 271, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley demanded,
safety should never be sacrifice to balance a budget. Diminishing our fire protection and emergency medical services is a public safety issue where time loss equals lives lost. We live in one of the highest profiled places in the world, and there's no room to compromise our protection.”

Making Our Streets Safer

The Robert Ogle Law

On October 8th, the NY City Council will hold a hearing on a bill I introduced to make our streets safer.  The new bill is founded in the tragedy of Robert Ogle and Alex Paul who were killed in a hit and run accident in
Middle Village. The driver was detrimentally intoxicated and had stolen an unattended idling car moments before while the owner ran into a convenience store.

In response to this
tragedy, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley introduced legislation to raise the penalty for leaving an unattended car running from $5 to $250. Working with the Ogle family, Council Member Crowley is raising awareness to prevent these avoidable and fatal accidents from happening.

Leaving your car running and unattended seems like a minor, careless mistake but all New Yorkers must understand that it is irresponsible, dangerous and potentially deadly,” stated Council Member Elizabeth Crowley.

Going Green

Picture
Council Member Crowley firmly believes that our nation will find the soltution to global climate change but that this solution will not only come from the top. The answer to global climate change must come from every day people doing small things. Elizabeth urges the members of her community to reduce their carbon foot print by doing simple things in their everyday lives. The easiest way to accomplish this is to buy local goods, decrease the amount of garbage we produce, and use less energy in our daily lives. It is important that we follow through with these simple acts as it will not only save our planet, but it will also help us all save money.

Council Member Elizabeth Crowley released an editorial on going green and saving money in the process. The Op Ed was featured in several news outlets, including the Times Newsweekly

As a testament to this belief, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley partnered with fellow Council Member David Yassky to put out a pamphlet guiding  small businesses on grants to take advantage of in the stimulus bill.

"The worst part of this economic downturn is that thousands of highly qualified people across New York City are losing their jobs. The times forces us to look for opportunities outside our normal professions that will help us through this economic storm and possibly pave way for a new career.  That is why I believe it is important, as your City representative, to recruit a diverse businesses across sectors in these cities and help make these jobs available to our community members in need of work."
